Simplicity and the Purity of Devotion
If trust is the heartbeat of a childlike heart, then simplicity is its natural rhythm. Children do not split their attention. They do not divide their inner world into parts. When they love, they love with their whole selves. When they are present, they are fully present. When they believe, they believe without overthinking.
It was this simplicity that the apostle Paul hoped to preserve in the early church when he wrote, “I am afraid that your minds may somehow be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:3) Paul’s concern wasn’t that the Corinthians would lose doctrine, discipline, or intellectual sharpness.
His concern was that they would lose simplicity—the single-heartedness that makes childlike faith possible.
Simplicity is not naïveté. It is not shallowness. It is not avoidance of deep thought. Simplicity is the alignment of the heart around one central truth:
“I am loved by the Father, and I belong to Him.”
From that place, everything else becomes clear.
