Performance Is the Enemy of Rest
Performance mentality can take many forms: Spiritual performance: reading enough, praying enough, attending enough, behaving enough. Moral performance: striving to be perfect, terrified of failure. Religious performance: doing Christian activities to prove we belong. Emotional performance: pretending to be okay because we think God expects it.
But beneath all performance, there is the same underlying fear: “Maybe the Father’s love is not secure. Maybe I need to make sure He keeps loving me.”
This fear does not come from the Father. It stems from our wounds, our history, and our human relationships.
The Father does not demand performance; He invites trust.
As Paul says in Galatians 5:1: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” Freedom, not fear. Relationship, not ritual. Belonging, not bondage.
